Intent - How our curriculum is structured and organised

A nurturing learning environment ensures each child can achieve their full potential. To deliver our PSHE curriculum we use a scheme called Jigsaw, which develops learning and results in the acquisition of knowledge and skills, which enables children to access the wider curriculum. PSHE provides our pupils with an opportunity to create personal understanding and provides them with an opportunity to challenge and explore a range of beliefs, attitudes, rights, values and responsibilities. Creating and developing the attributes and qualities children need to thrive as individuals and as members of the community, sharing our school values of Love, Compassion and Respect . Every Jigsaw lesson from Early Years to year 6 offers opportunities for children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development, and this is mapped and balanced across each year group. The Jigsaw curriculum is designed to provide structured opportunities in every lesson to practise and enhance the five skills associated with the emotional literacy (self-awareness, social skills, empathy, motivation and managing feelings) – these skills are vital for children’s development, their understanding of themselves and others and in increasing their capacity to learn. The British Values of Democracy, Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect and Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs are addressed in the British Values: Jigsaw PSHE 3-11.

The Jigsaw program is delivered as a whole school approach with a focus on 6 learning the themes that run concurrent throughout the school and each week the theme is explored further during collective worship focussing on positive behaviour, character attributes and values. The Jigsaw scheme includes links to British values, spiritual, cultural and key social skills. Equally, the scheme is planned and sequenced, demonstrating a spiral learning progression with key assessment points along the way to assess impact, and this supplemented by additional class circle times for teachers to touch base with pupils between PSHE lessons. For children with additional needs our PSHE lessons are implemented through adapted practice and a range of classroom strategies to make it accessible and inclusive for all.

All learners will demonstrate values of democracy, acceptance rather than tolerance and a mutual respect for everyone. Children will demonstrate a healthy outlook towards school, and improved interactions between each other, thus resulting in high attendance and behaviour will be good.  

Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE)

There are lessons within the Jigsaw RSHE that are considered additional to the statutory Relationships and Health Education and could be classified as Sex Education. These are the lessons that parents, in discussion with the Headteacher(s)/PSHE lead can withdraw their children from if they wish to. Viewing PSHE Teaching Materials

We want parents to feel informed about what their children are learning in PSHE. We provide various ways for parents to access information about the curriculum:

• Parent/Teacher Overview and Progression and Skills Map – available below, they provide a clear overview of what will be taught in each Puzzle.
• Parent Access to Lesson Materials – Parents who would like to see the standard Jigsaw lesson plans and teaching slides for their child's year group can request access. We provide secure access codes on a Puzzle-by-Puzzle basis (each half-term) for parents who specifically ask to see these materials. These show the published Jigsaw content, and we can explain any adaptations we have made for our classes. To request access, parents should contact their child's class teacher, who will provide a unique access code and link. These codes expire at the end of each half-term, and parents can request a new code for the next Puzzle if they wish.
